Most electric humidor problems come from four things: an inaccurate reading, a room outside the unit's working range, a dirty or blocked vent, or too much door opening. Before you call for service, check the humidity with a separate calibrated hygrometer, confirm the room is within range, clean the rear radiator and refill the tank with distilled water. Those steps solve most complaints. The rest of this guide goes through each symptom, what causes it and when it really is a fault.
Our examples come from the Humidor Supreme 9000-series manual and from what Raching owners report, because those are the cabinets we sell and support. The same logic applies to most electric cabinets, but always check your own manual first. Unplug the unit before you clean it, and leave anything behind a panel to a technician.

Electric humidor won't hold humidity
- Check the reading first. Built-in displays can be off. Raching owners on the Friends of El Habano forum report displays reading about 2% high. Put a calibrated digital hygrometer on a middle shelf, leave the door shut for a few hours, and go by that number.
- Check the water. A low or empty tank lets humidity fall below your setting. The Humidor Supreme manual says to add one cup of distilled water at a time, then wait.
- Give it time. After a change, allow at least an hour. A new cabinet takes longer, because dry cedar soaks up moisture. Our seasoning guide covers that.
- Check the door seal. Close the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out easily, the seal isn't tight. Humidor Supreme's manual says a seal can harden after about a year: keep it clean and dry, soften it with a hair dryer, or replace it.
- Count the door openings. Every opening lets the room's air in. In a shop or lounge with constant traffic, keep the door locked and open it on purpose. The manual recommends locking it for this reason.
Very dry room? Set the humidity a little higher. Humidor Supreme suggests 70–80% when the room is below 50% humidity, as long as your cigars tell you it's right. For more on non-electric causes, see humidor humidity too high or too low.
Humidity too high in an electric humidor
This is the opposite problem and it's common in Florida, the Gulf Coast and humid basements. Humidor Supreme's advice is simple: if the room is at 80–99% humidity, take water out of the tank and set the cabinet a little lower, in the 60–70% range. In a humid room the unit may need no added water at all. See our guide to humidors for hot, humid climates.
Condensation on the glass door
Warm humid room air hitting cold glass will fog it. The manufacturer calls this unavoidable in humid environments, and it isn't a defect. The fix is to shrink the gap between inside and outside:
- Ventilate the room or run the air conditioning.
- Raise the cabinet's set temperature a few degrees. The smaller the difference, the less it fogs.
- Keep the unit away from a window or an exterior door.
Water pooling inside the cabinet is different. Check that the drain opening and excess-water tank are clear, because frost melt at the back of the unit needs a route out.
Electric humidor not cooling
- Look at the room. Humidor Supreme says its cabinets work best in a room between 60 and 90°F and are most stable around 77°F. In a hot garage, the unit may not keep up.
- Clear the vent. Keep at least 6 inches of space behind the cabinet. A boxed-in cabinet can't get rid of heat.
- Clean the radiator. Humidor Supreme says to do this at least twice a year. Dust makes the unit work harder.
- Close the door properly. An alarm with a blinking temperature usually means a door left ajar, frequent opening, a blocked vent or a long power cut.
- Check power. Confirm the plug, the outlet and the display. Avoid long, light-duty extension cords.
Thermoelectric units are a special case. They only cool so far below the room, so a small cooler in a hot room may simply be out of its depth. See thermoelectric vs compressor vs water-cooled humidors.
Is that noise normal?
| Sound | What it usually is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Buzz when it starts a cycle | Compressor starting | Normal |
| Bubbling | Refrigerant circulating | Normal |
| Clicking | Thermostat starting and stopping | Normal |
| Air rushing | Fan running | Normal |
| Rattle or vibration | Unit not level, touching a wall or furniture, or a shelf out of place | Adjust the feet, move it clear and reseat the shelves |
Grinding, or a noise that gets steadily worse, isn't normal. Call the seller.
Musty smell or mold
The manual warns that turning a unit off for long periods can raise the chance of mold or mildew. Leave it running, even when you travel. If you find a white or green fuzz on the wood, take the cigars out, check them, and clean as the manual directs. Then find the cause: humidity set too high, a dirty tank or cigars packed so tight that air can't move. Humidor Supreme says to clean the humidity system every two months, and to renew the carbon filter once a year.
Your electric humidor maintenance calendar
| How often | Job |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Compare the display with a separate hygrometer. Check the water level. |
| Every 2 months | Clean the water tank and refill with distilled water. |
| Twice a year | Clean the radiator and vent. Wipe the door seal. |
| Yearly | Renew the carbon filter if your model has one. Do the dollar bill test. |
When it's a real fault
Call for service if the unit won't power on with a working outlet, the temperature keeps climbing in a normal room with clean vents, the fan has stopped, or humidity won't come up with a full tank. A failed cooling system can mean a refrigerant leak, which is a technician's job. Move your cigars to a sealed container with a humidity pack while you wait, and keep them out of the heat.
Buy from a dealer who will take that call. If you bought from us, phone (985) 531-8513. We handle the warranty claim with the manufacturer. Under our 30-Day Humidity Promise, if your cabinet won't hold 65–72% in the first 30 days after delivery, we fix it with you and ship the part at our cost.
Buying one from us? The Humidor Supreme 9000, 9100 and 9200 come with our 30-Day Humidity Promise: a fit check before it ships, a setup call after delivery, and humidity checks at Day 14 and Day 30.
Electric humidor problems FAQ
Why does my electric humidor keep dropping in humidity?
Usually a low tank, a tired door seal, frequent door opening or a very dry room. Check with a separate hygrometer first, since the display itself may be off.
Should I use tap water in an electric humidor?
No. Use distilled water, as the manufacturers specify. Tap water leaves minerals in the system.
Is condensation on the glass a defect?
Usually not. It comes from humid room air on cold glass. Lower the room's humidity or narrow the temperature gap.
Can I turn an electric humidor off when I travel?
Leave it on. Turning it off for long periods stops climate control and raises the risk of mold, according to the Humidor Supreme manual.
How long should an electric humidor last?
That depends on the brand, the room and the maintenance. Compare warranties when you buy: Humidor Supreme lists 1 year, and Raching gives 2 years on the cabinet and 6 on the compressor through an authorized US dealer.
