Cabinet Humidor Buying Guide: How to Choose a Cigar Cabinet

Cabinet Humidor Buying Guide: CubanVault guide

A cabinet humidor (also called a cigar cabinet or humidor cabinet) is a floor-standing, Spanish cedar-lined cabinet with a sealed glass door that stores 1,000 to 5,000+ cigars. To choose one, decide four things in this order: how many cigars it must really hold (buy about twice what you own today), traditional or electric (electric if the room gets warmer than about 72°F), shelves or drawers (boxes or singles), and where it will stand (footprint, outlet, delivery route). This guide walks through each step with real specifications and prices, so you can compare cabinets with confidence. We sell the cabinets mentioned here; we tell you when a cheaper one is the better buy.

Step 1: Size a cigar cabinet for the collection you'll have

Capacity labels assume standard corona-size singles stored loose. Keep cigars in their boxes or smoke big ring gauges and a cabinet holds far less. Humidor Supreme says as much in its own ratings: the 9000 is rated "2,600–4,500 cigars depending on size". Our humidor capacity guide shows that in boxes, real capacity is often 55–65% of the headline number.

  • The rule: buy a cabinet rated for about twice the cigars you own now. Collections grow, and a packed cabinet holds humidity unevenly.
  • Box aging? Count boxes, not cigars. The Sovereign 4000 is quoted at "roughly 100 boxes"; that's the more useful number for a box collector.
  • Under 400 cigars? You probably don't need a cabinet yet. An end table or countertop humidor costs less and is easier to keep stable. See large humidors.

2,000+ or a shop 4,000–5,000+ Sovereign (4,000), Saint Regis (4,000), 9000 electric (up to 4,500), commercial displays

Not sure? Our Humidor Finder asks how many cigars you have, where the cabinet goes and your budget, then suggests three models.

Step 2: Traditional cabinet humidor or electric humidor cabinet?

This is the biggest decision, and it depends on your room, not your taste. A traditional cabinet holds humidity with a humidifier but can't cool. Inside, it runs at about room temperature. An electric (electronic) cabinet has a compressor and a digital controller that hold both temperature and humidity.

Temperature matters because tobacco beetle eggs hatch when cigars sit warm for long periods. Cigar Aficionado recommends keeping cigars below about 70°F to avoid them (Cigar Aficionado). If your cigar room, office or garage gets warm in summer, buy electric. If it stays cool and steady year-round (a basement or an air-conditioned room), a traditional cabinet does the job for less money.

An electric humidor cabinet like the Humidor Supreme 9000 cools and humidifies on its own: 22⅜ inches wide, 75⅝ inches tall.

Step 3: What a cigar humidor cabinet costs

Price alone is misleading, because cabinets range from 1,000 to 5,000+ cigars. Divide the price by the rated capacity and the picture gets clearer: large traditional towers are the cheapest storage per cigar, and electric cabinets cost about two to three times as much per cigar. You're paying for the cooling.

Budget tiers

  • About $1,000–$1,700: 1,000-cigar mini towers and the 3,000-cigar Tower of Power. The best value if your room is cool.
  • About $2,000–$3,700: furniture-style and wide glass-front cabinets (Old English, Sovereign, Saint Regis), and the first electric models.
  • $4,000 and up: large electric cabinets (Reagan, 9200 dual-zone) and commercial displays for shops.

Remember the humidifier. Most traditional cabinets don't include one. Budget about $159 for a Hydra SM (up to 1,000 cigars) or $340 for a Hydra LG (up to 2,500 cigars), or buy a kit that includes it. See Hydra SM vs LG vs Turbo. Spreading the cost is possible too: see Pay Over Time.

Step 4: Features that matter (and ones that don't)

Spanish cedar interior

Spanish cedar holds and releases moisture, resists tobacco beetles and adds a light aroma. Every cabinet in our catalog is lined with it. Season it before loading cigars; see how to season a humidor.

Door seal and glass

A cabinet is only as good as its seal. Look for a gasketed or sealed door (Humidor Supreme calls theirs SureSeal) and tempered glass. Electric models add double-paned, UV-protected glass, which matters if sunlight reaches the cabinet.

Shelves vs drawers

Shelves suit boxes. Drawers suit singles and aging. Many towers let you choose: the Humidor Supreme tower comes with an 8-drawer aging layout or an all-shelf layout. Slotted shelves and bundle bins let air move around boxes, which keeps humidity even from top to bottom.

Interior outlets

An electronic humidifier needs power inside the cabinet. Most of our cabinets have two interior A/C outlets or a hidden wire slot. Check before you buy a cabinet that relies on passive humidifiers only; large cabinets lose humidity faster than passive trays can replace it.

What not to pay for

Built-in analog hygrometers are decorative. Use a calibrated digital hygrometer inside instead. Extra glass sides look great in a shop but let in more light at home.

The Tower of Power stands six feet tall but only 22½ inches wide, with drawers or shelves.

Step 5: Where the humidor cabinet will stand

  • Footprint: tall towers (22–23 inches wide) fit beside a desk or in an alcove. Wide cabinets like the Sovereign (48" W x 16" D x 72" H) need a full wall.
  • Away from heat and sun: not beside a window, radiator, fireplace or an exterior wall that bakes in summer.
  • A level floor and an outlet nearby: for the humidifier or the cooling unit.
  • The route in: cabinets arrive by freight on a pallet, delivered to your curb with a liftgate. Measure doors, halls and stairs first. Our freight delivery guide explains delivery day step by step.

Setting up your cabinet

  1. Wipe the cedar lightly with distilled water or use seasoning packs (Boveda), then let the cabinet stabilize for several days.
  2. Start the humidifier and aim for 65–70% relative humidity. Boveda explains why most smokers settle between 62% and 72% (Boveda).
  3. Check readings for a week before loading cigars, then add them gradually.
  4. If readings drift, see humidity too high or too low.

Cabinet humidor FAQ

What's the difference between a cigar cabinet and a humidor cabinet?

Nothing. "Cigar cabinet," "humidor cabinet" and "cabinet humidor" all describe a floor-standing, cedar-lined cabinet that stores cigars at controlled humidity. "Electric" or "electronic" means it also controls temperature.

How much does a good cabinet humidor cost?

At CubanVault, traditional cabinets start around $1,000 for 1,000 cigars and about $1,700 for 3,000. Electric cabinets run from about $2,900 to $6,900. Add $159–$340 for a humidifier if the cabinet doesn't include one.

Do cabinet humidors need a humidifier?

Most do. Traditional cabinets usually ship without one, or with passive trays that can't keep up in a large cabinet. An electronic humidifier such as a Hydra holds a set humidity automatically. Electric cabinets have humidification built in.

How long does a cabinet take to arrive?

In-stock cabinets usually ship in 1–3 business days and travel by freight. The carrier calls to schedule a delivery window. Freight is free on cabinets, and if anything arrives damaged we handle the claim and the replacement.

Can I put a cabinet humidor in a garage or basement?

A basement is often ideal if it stays cool and isn't damp. A garage usually gets too hot in summer and too cold in winter for a traditional cabinet; choose an electric model if the garage is the only option, and check it's rated for that room's temperature range.
