Commercial Cigar Humidor Buying Guide: Types, Sizing and Real Cost

Commercial cigar humidor buying guide: CubanVault guide

A commercial cigar humidor is a cabinet built for a business. It holds thousands of cigars, shows boxes behind sealed glass, locks, and keeps humidity steady while the door opens all day. To choose one, decide what the cabinet has to do (sell boxes, sell singles, or store members' cigars). Size it to your stock plus 20–30% headroom, and plan for electronic humidification from day one. With humidification included, the cabinets we sell cost about $665–$1,050 per 1,000 cigars of capacity, delivered free. That is a fraction of a built walk-in room. This guide compares the types, the specs that matter and the real cost, with live prices. We sell these cabinets, so we name the trade-offs honestly.

What makes a humidor "commercial"?

Every humidor has the same job: keep cigars at a steady humidity and temperature (Cigar Aficionado's definition of a humidor). Most shops aim for 65–70% and around 70°F. A home humidor gets opened a few times a week. A commercial humidor gets opened dozens of times a day, by staff and customers, in a room full of people. That changes what you need:

  • Capacity in the thousands. The cabinets in our commercial humidors range hold about 2,000 to 8,500 cigars each. (Storing a big personal collection rather than stock? See large cigar humidor cabinets.)
  • Display, not just storage. Glass doors, angled shelves and lighting, because a box the customer can't see rarely sells.
  • Seals and hardware for daily traffic. Gaskets, brush seals or magnetic closures, hinges that stay aligned, and locks.
  • Active humidification. Every opening lets humidity out. In a large cabinet, passive humidifiers can't recover fast enough on a busy day.
  • Power inside the cabinet. Interior outlets or a hidden wire port for a humidifier and lights.

The 5 types of commercial humidor, by business

Start with how you make money from cigars. A bar selling singles after dinner needs something very different from a lounge renting lockers to members.

Match the cabinet to how you sell. Capacities are manufacturer ratings.

1. Countertop display humidors (bars and restaurants)

About 250 cigars by the register or on the back bar. The Prestige Marciano ($360) is glass on all sides with three removable trays. The Prestige Manchester ($500) has four Spanish cedar drawers behind a glass door. Both use passive humidifiers, which is fine at this size if someone checks the hygrometer daily.

2. Tower humidors (a corner of a shop or lounge)

Towers hold 2,000–3,500 cigars in a narrow footprint. The Humidor Supreme Cigar Tower Kit is 22 ½ inches wide and six feet tall, with a Hydra electronic humidifier included ($1,995 with shelves, $2,095 with eight aging drawers). The Olde English Tower Kit ($2,495) holds about 3,500 cigars in a traditional cherry-veneer cabinet with rolling drawers for singles.

3. Glass-front display cabinets (retail cigar shops)

This is the workhorse of a cigar shop: a wide cabinet that shows boxes face-out. Shop buyers count box facings, the number of boxes shown face-out to the customer. See our cigar shop display planning guide for the facing math.

  • Humidor Supreme 4500 with LED: 24–48 box facings, about 4,000 cigars, two sealed tempered-glass doors, four tilting shelves. $3,695, or $4,195 with a Hydra Turbo.
  • Humidor Supreme 5000 Kit: 16–32 box facings plus a nine-bin bundle shelf and closed storage below, about 5,000 cigars, Hydra Turbo included. $4,595.
  • Prestige Bermuda (12 shelves with trays, up to 4,000 cigars, $3,390) and Prestige Saint Regis (glass on three sides, wood doors below, almost 4,000 cigars, $3,599). Both use built-in passive humidifiers.

4. Cigar locker cabinets (lounges and private clubs)

A locker cabinet gives each member a locked, Spanish cedar-lined compartment with an engraving plate for their name. Lounges usually rent them monthly or yearly, so the cabinet earns money rather than just costing it. See what lounges charge and how fast lockers pay back.

  • 14-locker cabinet: 12 locking sectionals plus 2 large base sections, about 5,000 cigars, 38" W × 18" D × 76" H. $3,845 in black or mahogany. The Locker Starter Package adds the Hydra Turbo for $4,095.
  • 29-locker cabinet: 28 lockers, each 12 inches tall (room for boxes and a bottle), plus a double locker for the humidifier. About 8,500 cigars. $5,495, humidifier not included.

5. Walk-in humidor rooms (big inventory)

A walk-in is built, not bought. It needs a vapor barrier, mold-resistant walls, Spanish cedar, a sealed door and a room humidifier (Holt's walk-in build guide). A walk-in for a small lounge typically runs $15,000–$40,000 (Crestmont Capital). Most new shops start with cabinets, which move with you if you relocate. They add a walk-in once sales justify it. Compare both in walk-in humidor vs display cabinets.

How to size a commercial humidor

Capacity ratings are manufacturer figures based on a typical mix of cigar sizes. Big ring gauges and boxed cigars fill a cabinet faster. Size from your own stock list:

  1. Count what you'll stock: boxes × cigars per box, plus bundles and singles.
  2. Add 20–30% headroom for new releases, seasonal buys and vendor promotions. A full cabinet also restricts the airflow your humidifier depends on.
  3. For a shop, count facings too. A cabinet can hold enough cigars and still show too few boxes. 80 SKUs with the top sellers doubled is about 115 facings, or two 4500s plus a 5000 Kit.
  4. For lockers, count members, not cigars. Fill a 14-locker first. A waiting list is the signal to add a 29-locker.
  5. Measure the path in. Check door widths, hallways and turns as well as the wall. A 76-inch-tall cabinet has to tilt through doorways.

Humidification: passive vs electronic

This is where commercial buyers most often go wrong. Passive humidifiers (sponges, beads or crystal jars you refill) work well in a closed box. A busy commercial cabinet is open constantly. Boveda, which makes two-way humidity packs, notes that a drafty humidor or very dry room air undermines passive control (Boveda: what RH do I need?).

An electronic humidifier has a fan, a sensor and a water reservoir. It reads the cabinet and adds moisture until it's back at your set point. The Hydra Turbo ($495) is the unit the manufacturer recommends for its locker and commercial cabinets. Quality Importers launched it as a commercial-grade unit at the 2025 Premium Cigar Association trade show (Cigar Coop). Per the manufacturer, it:

  • moves 107 CFM through two directional vents;
  • reads conditions with a remote sensor on a 6-foot cord;
  • can take an optional direct water line, so nobody refills it by hand;
  • regulates large cabinets and walk-ins up to 100 square feet.

Which Hydra fits which cabinet: Hydra SM vs LG vs Turbo.

Set point: most shops run 65–70%. Boveda calls 69% the most preferred level for premium cigars and 65% the choice for a drier, easier burn. Pick one and hold it; swings hurt more than the exact number. More in ideal humidity and temperature for cigars.

Temperature: commercial cabinets don't cool. They follow the room. If the room regularly runs above about 72°F, fix the room's air conditioning first, or look at electronic humidors with built-in cooling for your best stock.

Cost per 1,000 cigars: what a commercial humidor really costs

Sticker prices aren't comparable because capacities and included humidifiers differ. So we divided each price, with an electronic humidifier included or added, by its rated capacity:

Model Type Rated capacity Display Humidification Price
HS Commercial Display 4500 LED Display cabinet ~4,000 24–48 boxes, LED Optional Hydra Turbo kit $3,695 / $4,195 kit

HS 14-Locker Lockers ~5,000 12 + 2 lockers Add Hydra Turbo $3,845
HS 29-Locker Lockers ~8,500 28 lockers Add Hydra Turbo $5,495
HS Cigar Tower Kit Tower 2,000–3,000 10–24 boxes Hydra included $1,995–$2,095
HS Olde English Tower Kit Tower ~3,500 3 shelves + drawers Hydra included $2,495
Prestige Bermuda Display cabinet up to 4,000 12 shelves with trays 24 passive humidifiers $3,390
Prestige Saint Regis Display + storage ~4,000 3-side glass 6 passive humidifiers $3,599
Prestige Marciano Countertop 250 All-glass 2 passive humidifiers $360

Three things the numbers show:

  • Storage is cheapest in towers and big locker walls ($665–$713 per 1,000 cigars). Display costs more: the 4500's LED shelves and tilting glass front are what you pay for.
  • Kits are the honest price. A cabinet without a humidifier looks $495 cheaper, but in daily commercial use you'll add one anyway.
  • Lockers are the only type that earns rent. At $25 a month with 75% of lockers rented, a 14-locker with a Hydra Turbo ($4,340) pays for itself in about 19 months. Run your own numbers in the locker payback guide.

Spec-sheet checklist before you buy

Ask these about any commercial humidor, from us or anyone else:

  • Door seal: gasket, brush seal or magnetic closure? A cabinet that doesn't seal will never hold humidity, however good the humidifier.
  • Hinges: adjustable hinges keep heavy glass doors aligned after years of use. The Humidor Supreme lockers use two adjustable European hinges per door.
  • Interior power: built-in outlets or a hidden wire port, so the humidifier cord doesn't run through the door seal.
  • Spanish cedar: kiln-dried Spanish cedar shelves and lining help buffer humidity and are the traditional humidor wood.
  • Adjustable, slotted shelves: angled shelves face labels toward customers; slots let humidified air reach every box.
  • Locks: one key per door for displays; individual keys plus a master key for lockers.
  • Reach heights: put best-sellers between about 15 and 48 inches, the forward-reach range in the 2010 ADA Standards, section 308.
  • Authorized dealer and warranty: buy new from an authorized dealer so the manufacturer warranty applies.

Delivery, setup and seasoning

Commercial cabinets ship on a pallet by freight truck with liftgate delivery to your curb or loading area. The carrier calls to schedule a window. Plan for two people to move the cabinet inside. Before you sign, inspect the crate and write any damage on the delivery receipt. With us, freight damage is our problem: we handle the claim and the replacement. What to expect step by step: humidor freight delivery.

Before loading cigars, season the cedar so it doesn't pull moisture out of your stock. Then let the electronic humidifier stabilize for a day or two (how to season a humidor). Load the best-sellers last, once the hygrometer has held steady.

Commercial humidor FAQ

What is the difference between a commercial humidor and a regular cabinet humidor?

Scale and use. A commercial humidor holds thousands of cigars, displays boxes behind glass, locks, and is built for constant door openings, so it is normally paired with an electronic humidifier. A home cabinet humidor is opened less and can often run on passive humidification. Our cabinet humidor buying guide covers the home side.

How many cigars should a commercial humidor hold?

Your planned stock plus 20–30% headroom. For a shop, also check that the cabinets show enough box facings. For a lounge, count members who will rent lockers.

Do commercial humidors need an electronic humidifier?

In practice, yes. Daily openings let humidity out faster than passive humidifiers can replace it in a large cabinet. Humidor Supreme kits include a Hydra; for other cabinets, the Hydra Turbo is the manufacturer's recommendation.

How much does a commercial cigar humidor cost?

The cabinets above run from $1,995 for a 3,000-cigar tower kit to $5,495 for a 29-locker wall, or about $665–$1,050 per 1,000 cigars of capacity with humidification. A countertop display starts at $360. Freight delivery is free on all of them.

Should I build a walk-in humidor instead?

Only when your inventory and sales justify a construction project. Cabinets cost less, arrive as finished furniture rather than a construction project, and move with you.

Can you help plan a whole shop or lounge?

Yes. Our Lounge Fit-Out Program plans the humidor wall, lockers and smoke ventilation with you and quotes delivered prices. Or call (985) 531-8513 with your square footage and stock list.
